
Welcome to the Department of Physics (DoP) University of Peshawar. I would like to see the Physics Department emerge as a highly productive educational unit of the University of Peshawar, engaged in high quality research and teaching, employing the best academic practices.
I would strive to create an environment in the Department that is conducive for the generation and dissemination of knowledge within the bounds of the University’s Act/Statutes/Rules and Regulations. By doing so, we would not only attract the best students from across the country but would also help retain highly qualified faculty. I aspire to seek the help and guidance of all the stakeholders in making the coursework and research work more akin to the regional and national need while maintaining the international scope. I would like to see our physics graduates maintain a high standard of technical skills as well as work ethics. The role of faculty is extremely important in this case.
Every faculty member, irrespective of his/her field of specialization, must contribute to the research activities, whether curiosity-driven or applied in nature, theoretical or experimental, and it must result in articles published in reputed journals. I would like to see the Physics faculty with overlapping research interests joining their hands together to form active research groups. Furthermore, collaborative academic and research linkages with sister universities, both within the country and abroad, will be established to undertake joint research projects.
The Department of Physics at the University of Peshawar was established in 1955 and is among the university's oldest scientific departments. Since its inception, the department has played a significant role in promoting physics education and research in the region. Over the decades, it has produced thousands of graduates who have contributed to academia, research institutions, and scientific organizations both within Pakistan and internationally. The department developed strong foundations in teaching, laboratory training, and postgraduate research, helping to shape the scientific community in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Today, the department is a vibrant academic and research center within the Faculty of Numerical and Physical Sciences. It offers BS, MPhil., and PhD programs in Physics, providing students with comprehensive knowledge in both theoretical and experimental fields. Faculty members are actively engaged in research areas such as condensed matter physics, materials science, experimental and theoretical plasma physics, nanoscience, environmental physics, renewable energy, and computational physics. The department is equipped with modern laboratories and research facilities that support advanced learning and innovation. Regular seminars, workshops, and collaborative research activities further enhance the academic environment.
Looking toward the future, the Department of Physics aims to strengthen its role as a leading center of scientific excellence. Plans include expanding research in emerging areas such as advanced materials, higher energy physics, and advanced nanotechnology, while increasing international collaborations and industry partnerships. By modernizing research infrastructure and promoting interdisciplinary studies, the department seeks to prepare future physicists capable of addressing scientific and technological challenges at national and global levels.
