Dr. Fazal Hadi is a dedicated faculty member in the Department of Botany, University of Peshawar, bringing a rich blend of international exposure and deep regional expertise to his academic endeavors and has teaching and research exprience for more than two decades. He earned his Ph.D. in Botany with a multidisciplinary specialization in Medicinal Plants, Ethnobotany, Plant Systematics, and Plant Ecology, and further strengthened his research capabilities through a Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Davis, USA.

With a strong commitment to advancing botanical sciences, Dr. Hadi is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic mentorship at the postgraduate level. His work bridges classical taxonomic skills with modern molecular and ecological tools, fostering a dynamic learning environment for his students. He is deeply passionate about documenting and conserving the rich floristic heritage of Pakistan, particularly the diverse and ecologically fragile Hindukush-Himalayan range. Dr. Hadi aspires to contribute meaningfully to the scientific understanding of Pakistan's plant heritage and to inform evidence-based policies for its sustainable management.

Dr. Fazal Hadi did his M.Sc. (2003) in Botany and Ph.D. (2017) in medicinal plants, ethnobotany, plant systematics and plant ecology from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. He did his Postdoctoral fellowship (2026) from the prestigious research and academic institute, the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Davis, California USA in Molecular systematics and also serves as Research Associate in the same institute. 

Dr. Hadi's research is broadly centered on the floristic wealth of the Hindukush-Himalayan range, one of the world's most diverse and  ecologically fragile regions. His work spans the following interconnected areas:

Plant Systematics and Taxonomy – Documenting and revising the flora of the Hindukush-Himalayan range with a focus on species delimitation, classification, and floristic inventories.

Ethnobotany – Exploring indigenous knowledge systems and traditional uses of plants by local communities for medicine, food, fodder, and cultural practices.

Conservation Biology – Assessing threats to plant diversity, identifying endangered species, and developing strategies for habitat protection and restoration.

Phytochemistry and Medicinal Plants – Investigating the bioactive compounds of economically and therapeutically important medicinal plant species.

Plant Ecology and Biodiversity – Studying plant community structure, distribution patterns, ecosystem dynamics, and biodiversity assessment.

Molecular Systematics and Phylogenetics – Utilizing DNA-based approaches (molecular markers, DNA barcoding, phylogenomics) to resolve evolutionary relationships and cryptic species complexes.

Climate Change and Plant Responses – Examining how shifting climatic patterns affect plant phenology, distribution shifts, adaptation mechanisms, and vulnerability.

Sustainable Utilization of Plant Resources – Promoting the responsible and equitable use of plant materials for health, food, and livelihood security while ensuring long-term conservation.

Dr. Fazal Hadi has been serving as a faculty member in the Department of Botany, where he teaches a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses like: Plant Systematics and Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Plant Ecology, Medicinal Plants and Phytochemistry, Biodiversity Conservation and Phytogeography, Molecular Systematics and Research Methodology. His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical inquiry, rigorous fieldwork, interdisciplinary learning and teaching. He is known for his student-centered approach, encouraging hands-on field training and modern laboratory practices. He actively supervises Undergrate, M.Phil., and Ph.D. research scholars in their research work.


Dr. Fazal Hadi has published more than eighty research articles and book chapters in reputable national and international peer-reviewed journals. His work has contributed significantly to the understanding of Pakistan's plant diversity, medicinal flora, molecular systematics and conservation challenges. He has visited and represented Pakistan on international forums in different countries like United States of America, Italy, Turkey, China, UAE, and Germany. 

Through his teaching, research, and conservation advocacy, Dr. Fazal Hadi aspires to:

Contribute meaningfully to the scientific understanding of Pakistan's plant heritage.

Train a new generation of botanists who are scientifically proficient, culturally aware, and environmentally responsible.

Bridge traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific approaches.

Inform evidence-based policies for the sustainable management and conservation of plant resources in the Hindukush-Himalayan region.

Foster national and international research collaborations to address pressing environmental challenges.
